The Child Development Philosophy – Learning Through Play

Research and experience tell us that children learn best by doing. Have you ever heard the phrase, “play is a child’s work?” Most of us think this is a nice idea and then privately think, “But, the child’s just playing. What is the child learning?” Play provides the foundation for academic or school learning.  In a good early-childhood preschool program, children have the opportunity to engage in many types of play experiences. They dress-up in the dramatic play area, they build roads and towns with blocks and they create in the art area. But, you still wonder “How will this help my child to learn to read and do math?”

When children put blocks in a truck and dump them they are learning about size, weight and number concepts (math and science). A child who is pretending that a block is a sandwich is developing the thought process necessary to understand written language and reading (symbolic thought). Play provides the appropriate climate for pre-skill learning.  Play is inherently interesting and children will engage in it for many hours. Through play, children meet developmental challenges, as well as, develop the attitude that learning is a meaningful activity.

Child Development Classroom

When you walk into the Child Development Classroom you will find a large, colorful room divided carefully into planned centers of learning. The Child Development class room includes the following centers of learning: dramatic play, writing center, manipulative play, blocks, art, library, listening center, music and movement, sensory table, science, outdoor play and gym. These defined areas allow the child to play and explore materials with the guidance of the teacher either individually or in small groups.  The classroom is filled with bright colors and a variety of materials for your child to manipulate, explore, snuggle, play with and share. The room is especially designed to encourage your child’s natural curiosity and desire to learn.
