Welcome

Elaine Ouellette
Director of RCIA & Family Faith Formation

The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is a process designed for adults who are interested in learning more about the Catholic faith and/or are thinking about becoming Catholic.  We welcome new members year round.

Meetings take place in the Family Center on Sunday evenings, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.  The meeting present an overview of Catholic beliefs and provide an opportunity to ask questions and explore your feelings and any concerns you might have.  The RCIA exerts no pressure on people in any way; you will find yourself in a friendly and welcoming group where you can comfortably contemplate this important decision in your life.

During the course of the process, members of the RCIA group are invited to participate in several preparatory Rites, which usually take place during Sunday Mass.  Throughout the year, RCIA members that attend weekend Mass are dismissed after the homily to gather together in the Reflection Room of the Family Center to reflect on the homily and the Sunday readings until the end of Mass.

Those who go through the process who have not yet been baptized (called catechumens) have the opportunity to join the Catholic Church during the Easter Vigil Mass, where they receive the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. Those who are already baptized and feel drawn to become members of the Catholic Church are received into Full Communion at various times throughout the year depending upon their readiness.

Questions to ponder:
  • What spoke to your heart in today's liturgy?
  • What reading, symbol, music, homily, spoke to you and why?
  • What touched your heart the most in today's Gospel reading?
Discipleship

Todays reading from Wisdom is a reminder that only through the power of the Holy Spirit are we called, empowered and strengthened to live a life of discipleship.

The Gospel reminds us that we are all called to take up our cross for the sake of others-it is our Christian responsibility.

Parts of the Mass
The Dismissal

[An excerpt from A New Look at the Sacraments, by William J. Bausch]

The oldest term for the Mass was the Lord's Supper or the breaking of the bread and then, later on, the Greek term Eucharist, a word meaning praise and thanksgiving. But the word Mass has been predominant since the fourth century. Actually, it means "dismissal." We should recall that catechumens were dismissed in a quite solemn way by the bishop after the liturgy of the word. This first dismissal must have impressed the pagans when they saw all the people exiting together from their meeting. From this association came the word Mass ever since. Pope Innocent III wrote, "Missa comes from 'dismissal' because the catechumens are sent away at the moment when the priest begins to consecrate the Eucharist."
